This guide walks you through the entire process of transferring a domain away from HOSTDOG — from unlocking the domain and getting your auth code, to completing the transfer with your new registrar. The process varies slightly depending on whether you have a generic TLD (.com, .net, .eu) or a .gr domain.
Before you begin
Before initiating a transfer, make sure the following conditions are met:
- The domain has been registered (or last transferred) for at least 60 days — this is an ICANN requirement for most TLDs
- The domain is not in Expired or Redemption status
- You have access to the registrant email address on file — transfer confirmation emails are sent there
- An active account at the new registrar where you want to transfer the domain
ns1.hostdog.gr and ns2.hostdog.gr.
Navigate to the HOSTDOG homepage and click the Log in button in the top right corner. Enter your credentials to access the Client Area.
Go to Domains → My Domains, then click the domain you want to transfer. On the domain management page, find the Registrar Lock setting and toggle it to Off.
Registrar Lock is a security feature that prevents unauthorized transfers. It must be disabled before any transfer can proceed.
On the same domain management page, click Get EPP Code. The auth code may be displayed on screen or sent to the registrant email address, depending on the TLD.
For detailed instructions, see How to get your domain auth code (EPP).
Log in to your account at the new registrar and look for a «Domain Transfer» or «Transfer In» option. Enter your domain name and the auth code when prompted. The new registrar will submit a transfer request.
After the new registrar submits the request, you will receive a confirmation email at the registrant email address. Click the approval link in that email to authorize the transfer.
If you do not act on the confirmation email, the transfer may be auto-approved after 5 days (for most TLDs) or it may be cancelled — this depends on the specific TLD policies.
Generic TLD transfers (.com, .net, .org, .eu) typically complete within 5–7 days. The domain remains fully functional throughout — your website and email continue to work without interruption.
You will receive a notification from the new registrar once the transfer is finalized.
Transferring a .gr domain away
For .gr domains, the process follows the EETT registrar change procedure:
- The process is technically an αλλαγή καταχωρητή (registrar change), not a standard ICANN transfer
- You need the κωδικός εξουσιοδότησης (authorization code) from HOSTDOG
- Provide the code to your new registrar, who submits a registrar change declaration to the EETT registry
- HOSTDOG must forward the declaration to the registry within 3 working days
- The domain remains active throughout the process
After the transfer
- DNS settings — if your hosting remains at HOSTDOG, keep the nameservers as
ns1.hostdog.grandns2.hostdog.gr. If you are also moving your hosting, update them to your new provider's nameservers. - Renewal date — for generic TLDs, a transfer usually adds one year to the existing expiry date. For .gr domains, the expiry date does not change during a registrar change.
- Re-enable registrar lock — once the transfer is complete at the new registrar, enable their registrar lock feature to protect against unauthorized transfers.
