This guide shows you how to obtain the auth code (EPP code) for a domain registered at HOSTDOG. The process takes just a few steps through your Client Area and gives you the code you need to initiate a domain transfer to another registrar.

What is an auth code?

An auth code (EPP code, authorization code, or transfer key) is a randomly generated alphanumeric string associated with your domain. It serves as a password that proves domain ownership during a registrar transfer. Without it, no registrar can initiate a transfer of your domain.

Key facts about auth codes:

  • Every domain has one — it is created when the domain is registered
  • Auth codes are case-sensitive
  • Some registrars regenerate the code periodically or upon request for security
  • For .gr domains, the auth code is called κωδικός εξουσιοδότησης (authorization code) and is required for a registrar change (αλλαγή καταχωρητή)
Note: The auth code is only needed for transferring to a different registrar. You do not need it to change nameservers, update DNS records, or renew your domain.

Prerequisites

  • A domain registered through HOSTDOG
  • Access to the HOSTDOG Client Area (you must be the account owner or an authorized contact)
  • The domain must be at least 60 days old (ICANN policy for most TLDs)
  • The domain must not be locked or in a pending transfer state
Step 1:
Log in to the Client Area

Navigate to the HOSTDOG homepage and click the Log in button in the top right corner. Enter your email and password to access the Client Area.

Step 2:
Navigate to your domains

In the Client Area, click Domains in the top navigation menu, then select My Domains. This displays a list of all domains associated with your account.

Step 3:
Select the domain

Click on the domain name for which you need the auth code. This opens the domain management page.

Step 4:
Request the auth code

On the domain management page, look for the Get EPP Code option (sometimes labeled «Authorization Code» or «Transfer Key»). Click it to request the code.

Depending on the TLD, the auth code may be:

  • Displayed on screen — copy it immediately and store it securely
  • Sent by email — check the email address associated with your HOSTDOG account or the domain registrant contact
Tip: If you do not see the EPP code option, the domain may be locked. Check the Registrar Lock status on the same page and disable it before requesting the code. [VERIFY]
Step 5:
Use the auth code

Provide the auth code to your new registrar when initiating the transfer. The code is typically valid for a limited time (often 5 to 14 days depending on the TLD), so start the transfer process promptly after obtaining it.

Auth codes for .gr domains

For .gr domains, the process differs slightly because .gr is managed by the EETT registry:

  • The authorization code is called κωδικός εξουσιοδότησης
  • It is required for a registrar change (αλλαγή καταχωρητή) — which is what most people mean when they say «domain transfer» for .gr
  • HOSTDOG, as an EETT-accredited registrar, issues this code upon request
  • Note the distinction: a registrar change (same owner, different managing company) is not the same as an ownership transfer (μεταβίβαση)

If you cannot locate the auth code through the Client Area for a .gr domain, contact HOSTDOG support and they will provide it.

Troubleshooting

Auth code not visible in the Client Area

Some TLDs send the auth code by email instead of displaying it on screen. Check the email address on file for the domain registrant. If you still cannot find it, contact HOSTDOG support.

Registrar Lock prevents unauthorized transfers. Go to the domain management page in the Client Area and toggle Registrar Lock to «Off» before requesting the auth code. You can re-enable it after the transfer is complete if you decide not to transfer.

Auth codes are case-sensitive — make sure you copied it exactly with no extra spaces. If the code has expired, request a new one from the Client Area. Some TLDs regenerate the code after a few days.
