Below you'll find the incoming mail server settings (IMAP and POP3), outgoing mail server settings (SMTP), and the correct ports and encryption options for each. All values apply to every HOSTDOG email account.

Tip: Replace yourdomain.com with your actual domain name throughout. For example, if your domain is example.gr, your mail server would be mail.example.gr.

Which protocol should I use?

IMAP is recommended for most users. Here's the key difference:

  • IMAP keeps your emails on the server and syncs across all your devices. If you read an email on your phone, it shows as read on your computer too. This is the best choice if you access email from multiple devices.
  • POP3 downloads emails to a single device and can optionally remove them from the server. Use this only if you want all mail stored locally on one computer.

For a detailed comparison, see Understanding IMAP vs. POP3.

Which SMTP port should I use?

Both ports work for sending emails:

  • Port 465 (SSL/TLS) — Establishes an encrypted connection from the start. Widely supported and reliable.
  • Port 587 (STARTTLS) — Starts as an unencrypted connection, then upgrades to encrypted. Some corporate networks require this port.

If one port doesn't work, try the other. Some ISPs or networks block specific ports.

Webmail access

You can also access your email directly from a web browser without configuring any email client:

Method URL
Webmail https://yourdomain.com:2096
Alternative https://webmail.yourdomain.com

Log in with your full email address and password.

Frequently asked questions

What should I enter as the mail server hostname?

Always use mail.yourdomain.com, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain. This resolves to the correct mail server for your hosting account.

The display name is simply the name recipients will see when they receive your email (e.g., "John Smith" or "HOSTDOG Support"). It's not a technical setting.

Yes, always. SMTP authentication is required for sending emails through HOSTDOG's servers. Use the same email address and password as your incoming mail settings.
